The pick of the prices at Newmarket on Thursday….

In ATC today….

…. I bring you my best picks at Newmarket tomorrow afternoon….

I’m on SOVEREIGN SPELL in the 1.50 – up at 10s & 9s….

That’s the summary….

…. the Betway Handicap - Newmarket – 1.50....

If you wanted to construct a Mission Impossible betting scenario….

…. you probably couldn’t do much better than a 16-runner handicap….

…. restricted to 3yos….

…. at the very start of a new turf flat season….

…. with 13 of the lightly-raced and unexposed contestants having not been seen since last term….

…. and nobody outside of the training establishments concerned having any clue how much each horse has progressed from two to three or how far forward or not each participant is in terms of race fitness….

But I never shy away from a challenge….

…. and I do like the 10s & 9s about SOVEREIGN SPELL….

He’s got some form in the book that suggests his mark of 85 is going to prove well within his compass….

On debut in a 5f maiden at today’s track he was only a neck behind Charlie Appleby’s Rising Power….

…. and two races down the line that one’s rated 96….

A little later in his juvenile season he ran into Saeed Bin Suroor’s Sword Maker at Doncaster….

…. and whilst he was beaten 3-lengths on the day in a big field, I note that the winner is also rated 96 going into this new season….

Unlike almost all of his opponents tomorrow, Sovereign Spell has a had a recent run to clear away the cobwebs….

…. and it was a winning return to action too – at Wolverhampton at the end of last month….

It was only a C4, but he won it well, and you’d think it would put him dead right for this step up in class tomorrow – giving him a potential fitness edge on the field….

…. and the fourth horse home has been out since and won subsequently – adding a thin layer of polish to the form….

I think he’s a fair price with a bit going for him off the rating….
