Get my picks for Saturday here….
In ATC today….
…. I bring you my best picks from Sunday’s action at Newmarket….
I’m on MY HIGHNESS in the 3.35 – up at 9s….
…. and I’m on POLE STAR at 12s & 11s in the 2.55….
That’s the summary….
…. you’ll find all my reasoning below – as per usual….
Oh…. and if you’re looking for the standout place terms on offer – you’ll find them in the Bet Box below….
Read on….
-----
…. the 1000 Guineas – Newmarket – 3.35....
I’m always tempted to go a bit wild in the 1000 Guineas – looking for the shock….
…. but I’m feeling more conservative about the race this year and I want to back Andre Fabre’s MY HIGHNESS at the general 9s….
Fabre really does like a winner at Newmarket – a track he’s frequently described as ‘the best course in the world’….
…. but he’s sparing with the bullets he fires at the track – whatever the race – insisting on only sending the good ones with a real chance….
His record in the Guineas races attests to that discipline….
…. just six qualifying runners since 2002 in either race produced a winner and three placers….
….so, it’s definitely worth sitting up and taking notice when he sends one….
…. particularly when he goes to the trouble of securing the services of the champion jockey early in the week….
My Highness got beaten in her prep race at Deauville – but Fabre wasn’t worried about that – excusing her on account of soft ground….
…. and if he’s not worried, I’m certainly not going to concern myself with fretting about it….
Maybe something will turn out to be better on the day….
…. but her very presence tells you she’s a player up at a reasonable price….
…. and that’s good enough for me in a race of this nature….
-----
…. the Betfred Handicap – Newmarket – 2.55....
I’m backing Charlie Johnston’s POLE STAR at the general 12s & 11s in this one….
He won a nice handicap at Haydock last term and then followed up with a career-best performance when winning at Yarmouth off a mark of 87….
He was subsequently handed some tough assignments in his own age group
at York and then back at Haydock….
…. before being sent to Newmarket to contest the Cesarewitch – a tough ask for a 3yo but perhaps an indication of the confidence connections have in this horse….
I can’t imagine they’ve got to the bottom him at this relatively early stage in his career….
…. he’s a big horse, he was gelded in the autumn, and you’d think there’s more to come from him this term having had the benefit of a winter to grow further into his frame….
He started off this campaign perfectly well at Newbury just over a fortnight back, running like he might have needed it – and he’s entitled to come on for that outing….
I like the step back to 14f – the trip at which he’s produced each of his best four performances to date….
…. the visor goes on to aid concentration….
…. and I think he’s potentially well-handicapped – and a player – on a mark of 87….
