The pick of the Shergar Cup prices….

In ATC today….

…. I bring you my best picks in the Shergar Cup….

I’m on KENDALL ROY in the 1.35 – up at 8s….

…. I’m on FIGJAM at 14s & 12s in the 3.20….

…. and I’m on CROWN BOARD at 17/2 & 8s in the 4.30….

That’s the summary….

…. you’ll find all my reasoning below – as per usual….

Oh…. and if you’re looking for the standout place terms on offer – you’ll find them in the Bet Box below….

Read on….

-----

…. the Shergar Cup Dash – Ascot – 1.35....

I’m going with Irish raider KENDALL ROY for this one – at the general 8s….

Don’t ask me what difference it will make to him having Frida Valle Skar in the saddle rather than regular rider Chris Hayes – because I’ve got no idea how to quantify that….

…. but the 5yo turns up in good form having ran a cracker in a handicap at Cork just a fortnight back – behind a winner and a runner-up that raced on a different part of the track….

He’d found a G2 race at the Curragh a little too hot to handle the time before….

…. but on seasonal debut at Cork, he won a Listed race in more comfortable fashion than the winning distance of half a length suggests….

…. and he’s improved a stack for trainer Kate McGivern this term….

And there could be more to come yet….

…. a G1 entry for the Flying Five at the Curragh in September offers a clue about how far up the ladder connections think this lad can get….

…. and if they’re not too far off the mark with their assessments then a Shergar Cup handicap – in which some of the opposition turn up out of form – should be within his compass off a mark of 102….

He won that Listed race at Cork coming with a late run off the early fractions….

…. and with a strong early pace on the cards tomorrow, 5f at Ascot might just set him up perfectly….

-----

…. the Shergar Cup Sprint - Ascot – 3.20....

Scottish trainer Katie Scott isn’t one to wilfully waste petrol money….

…. and just last week she showed exactly what she can do when she fills up the tank and heads South – when Naana’s Shadow won the Buccellati at Goodwood….

It’s not the first time the small yard has come out on top on a big day having travelled….

…. and FIGJAM is an interesting contender at a decent price – up at 12s generally but with some 16s & 14s still available in places this morning….

She produced a career best at York in a G3 when last seen….

…. very much up against it at the weights and the prices on the day but producing a creditable effort nevertheless – finishing 6/13 and beaten 3.25 lengths….

The form of that race is working out well too….

…. winner Flora Of Bermuda won a big-field G3 at Goodwood just last week….

…. and third-placed Soul Love won a big-field Listed race at Naas next time out….

Katie Scott’s charge drops to handicap level for the first time tomorrow and could be very nicely rated on 92….

Thunder Call looks the right favourite given his last two goes in big handicaps….

…. but he’s plenty short enough for me at the 2s….

…. and the filly is an interesting contender at the price….

-----

…. the Shergar Cup Mile – Ascot – 4.30....

I’m opting for CROWN BOARD at the general 17/2 & 8s for this one….

He’s been in decent fettle for Jane Chapple Hyam on his two runs to date this campaign….

…. finishing third in a race at Newmarket – which his trainer suggested he would come on for….

… and then finding course-specialist Hickory just a little too good (or a little too well-handicapped) last time on the straight at tomorrow’s track….

He’d sweated up that afternoon – and maybe that just took a bit of the edge off him in the closing stages….

…. but he’s shown enough to suggest he can win a handicap off his current mark if or when things fall right….

It had been the intention to run him in the G3 mile on the Ascot card that last day….

…. why that didn’t happen, I don’t know….

…. but – like tomorrow’s race – that was on the round mile and this looks like an adaptation of that original plan….
