The pick of the prices in the Cambridgeshire….

In ATC today….

…. I bring you my best picks in the Saturday handicaps on ITV….

I’m on SPANISH VOICE in the 3.40 at Newmarket – up at 25s….

That’s the summary….

…. you’ll find all my reasoning below – as per usual….

Just the single pick this weekend….

…. I don’t like the televised handicaps at Haydock tomorrow….

….  nothing is speaking to me….

…. and when I find myself ‘reaching’ for bets in a race I take it as a cue to pull back….

I thought about Pathein for tomorrow’s Cambridgeshire at Newmarket (3.40)….

…. he benefits from the weight-for-age allowance, he’s ridden by king-of-the-strip William Buick, and his campaign looks like it’s been centred around this assignment….

And I get the case for Erzindjan – who I touched on earlier in the week….

…. he might be an 8yo – but he ran a cracker on the wrong side in last season’s renewal, he’s attractively weighted on his best form, and Billy Loughnane takes the ride – a positive….

But in a valuable big-field betting heat….

…. featuring a stack of horses full of potential improvement….

…. I want a dark horse that can run big at a price….

…. and the one I keep coming back to is Andrew Balding’s SPANISH VOICE – with Oisin Murphy up – at the 25s….

There’s no doubt about it – this horse has been in and out over the summer….

…. and he was disappointing when sent off favourite at Ascot last time….

But he likes this track….

…. winning a novice race with Push The Limit (now rated 103) and Valedictory (now 100) in behind….

….and following up in good style when coming out on top in a handicap back in May – making all….

He won another handicap in June – this time on Newmarket’s July track….

…. adopting completely different tactics – travelling into the race from the rear off a decent pace and finishing off strong in a good time….

…. but I wonder if the plan will be to sit back and let others do the early spadework – before travelling into it in the later stages….

That last win at Newmarket – as impressive as the 4yo’s been in my book – certainly underscored those tactics as an option….

The step up in trip in his favour….

…. so too a decent pace….

…. and – given the way he’s performed at this track – you’d think this is the day they’ve had in mind for him….

He’s under the radar – not least because he’s disappointed on occasions….

…. but tomorrow’s race delivers a set-up that’s tailormade to his requirements….   

…. and he’s interesting at a price….
