The contrarian perspective this weekend….

Just the one bet for me tomorrow afternoon – and it comes in the Bernard Sunley Memorial Handicap at Newmarket (2.45)....

I think John Quinn’s ASHINGTON is over-priced at 20s.

My take is that the step-up to tomorrow’s 14f trip will see him improve on what we’ve seen from him so far....

He’s only had two races for Quinn since being bought out of the Autumn sales for 100,000 guineas (the 4yo had previously been with Luca Cumani)....

On the first of those, he did very little of note....

But last time at Hamilton was much more promising....

Quinn replaced cheekpieces with a first-time visor and, whilst the horse ran keen and ended up getting beaten 3.5 lengths into 5th of 8, the closing stages of the race suggest this horse is a candidate to deliver more over further....

He got a bit outpaced when the Hamilton race started winding-up in the straight, but he stuck on very nicely at the end without being knocked about and he went through the line well....

Connections will have learnt a little about him now. The longer trip says as much. And the new headgear certainly didn’t hinder. That remains in place. And Tom Marquand comes in for the ride....

I don’t know how much emphasis to put on that booking – if any....

All I will say is that Tom Marquand is down to do 8-08 – and he hasn’t been getting down to that weight much this year....

Few horses tick every box. I liked the last run. The horse is down to 88 on the official scale – which might prove a very handy mark. And I believe it is the step-up in trip that will prove to be the key that turns the lock....

All things taken together, the 20s is a nice each-way price with most firm paying out on 1-2-3-4 places....

The Contrarian Bet Box….

To recap on where my contrarian money will be going tomorrow afternoon….

In the Bernard Sunley Memorial Handicap (2.45 @ Newmarket).

  • Nick’s Contrarian Picks – ASHINGTON each-way (20s generally)

That is my take on where the value lies – but you will no doubt have your own ideas and that’s exactly as it should be.

  • The last word….

That’s all from me for now.

No ATC Extra today. I’ll be back in your inbox next week....

Win lose or draw – enjoy the racing tomorrow....

Until next time. Stay tuned.
